Tony Blair has written a letter to his Italian counterpart, Silvio Berlusconi, to express concern at problems facing a British Gas development in southern Italy. The letter said that by easing bureaucratic obstacles to the industrial project Italy could provide a concrete example of liberalisation in the EU's energy markets.

BG said it had no idea how the issue came to the attention of the prime minister.
