New heart drug could save 10,000 lives a year

A new treatment, developed in Britain and France, which could cut the number of heart attacks and strokes by a fifth was welcomed as the biggest cardiac breakthrough in 20 years.

Clopidogrel - which comes in simple tablet form - should be taken daily with aspirin and has been shown in clinical trials to thin potentially fatal clots which prevent blood reaching the heart and brain.
