The European Commission is set to propose new ways of speeding up the drug development process in an effort to halt the drift in medicinal research to the states.

The commission hopes that the moves will cut the time it takes to give the green light to new drugs from 18 months to under a year - which would place the EU at a clear advantage over the US where the average approval time is 17 months.
