Labour Party membership has dropped to 280,000 as Tony Blair approaches a second term. Party membership has haemorrhaged by over 100,000 since 1997.

The Guardian has seen internal Labour correspondence that gives the party's true membership at 280,000 - considerably lower than the 360,000 officially claimed.
