A £135 million aid package for sacked Corus steel workers was announced by Stephen Byers, trade and industry secretary, yesterday.

The government had been pressing for Corus to scale down job losses but yesterday the company announced 6000 redundancies in coming months. Byers presented the recovery package to the Commons and promised to stand by the workers.
