US president George W Bush has expressed his regret at the death of a Chinese fighter pilot in a collision with an American EP-3 spy plane last Sunday.

Bush's conciliatory comments that he did not want the incident to destabilise US/Chinese relations carried the proviso that China should release the plane's 24-strong crew quickly.
