The Daily Mail claims that a "senior cabinet minister" has told the paper that former Northern Ireland secretary Peter Mandelson has re-emerged as a power within Downing Street.

The paper claims Mandelson has told "friends" of his delight that the prime minister has phoned him, often several times a day, for advice on the general election date.
