Brown bets on increased majority
The chancellor has surprised his own party by predicting that Labour will increase its majority at the next election. Gordon Brown's opinion was given to a private meeting of Labour MPs, one of whom said "Gordon went way over the top".
Senior party officials moved to warn against complacency but Brown's aides said that he was being anything but complacent and added that the message was that Labour should "fight for every vote".
