Tories to cut Whitehall staff

Tory leader, William Hague, yesterday told the civil service that legislation to cut the size of the government machine - includng the Cabinet - would be one of the priorities of an incoming Conservative government.

Other priorities would include legislation on crime, asylum, privatisation of Channel 4 and the student loans company.

The news came as Hague took up his right to brief the head of the civil service, Sir Richard Wilson, ahead of the election.
