Anti-protest powers for police

The police are to be given controversial new powers to prevent protests by animal rights "extremists", including measures against hate mail - bringing emails and text-messaging under the Malicious Communications Act.

The proposals to be tabled on Thursday as amendments to the Criminal Justice and Police Bill were announce by the home secretary, Jack Straw, on Wednesday.
