GM crop trial rules tightened

The government has announced tighter controls for field trials of genetically modified crops, with separation distances being increased by up to double the existing margin.

Ministers are also to approve 96 trials this year, double the number approved last year. The plans have provoked outrage in the influential organic and environmental lobbies.
