The Tories yesterday called for the removal of Alastair Campbell from the civil service payroll after the prime minister confirmed in the Commons that his official spokesman had dismissed Tory economic policy as "mickey mouse".

Andrew Lansley said Campbell was not on the public payroll to engage in partisan slanging matches with the government's political opponents.
