Essex's director of education, Paul Lincoln, has written to education secretary, David Blunkett, warning that a shortage of teachers may lead to the education authority being unable to keep all of its schools open five days a week. He warned that "A significant number of head teachers have told us they have recently been forced to appoint candidates who only two years ago they would not have shortlisted."
