The National Union of Teachers has warned it may take "protective action" to prevent teachers being forced to cover classes for which they are unqualified in areas where there are staff shortages.

Doug McAvoy, the NUT's general secretary, said schools should move to a four-day week rather than force teachers into such an "invidious position".
