Police seek new powers to combat drink-driving
ePolitix

The police are seeking further powers to clamp down on drunk drivers.

The Association of Chief Police Officers is seeking powers allowing officers to stop persistent convicted offenders on suspicion at any time. Currently the police must meet the legal test of suspecting that an offence is being committed before being able to breathalyse.

New figures for the festive period show a 10 per cent increase in drink driving offences. Police blame the increase on "persistent offenders".
