The FT reports that the prime minister has assembled an "A list" of key Labour figures, including Gordon Brown, David Blunkett, Alistair Darling and Margaret Beckett to lead the next election campaign. Other highly capable figures, such as Geoff Hoon and Lord Irvine, will be called on only if particular issues are in the spotlight. Peter Mandelson will lead from the back, having a key tactical role.

The Tories, too, have an A list of key personnel, including Michael Portillo, Ann Widdecombe, Liam Fox and Francis Maude.
