Clampdown on cowboy builders falling down

Only two companies have signed up to a new scheme designed to guarantee the quality of builders' work, and industry chiefs fear that the scheme will be shelved unless momentum can be restored. Housing minister, Nick Raynsford, is to write to 900 building firms offering to pay the £350 registration charge required to join the pilot project, running in Birmingham and Somerset.
