Health secretary Alan Milburn yesterday indicated to local health authorities that fertility treatment should be available to those who need it on the NHS. He has asked the National Institute for Clinical Excellence to update existing guidelines on use of the procedures and believes that the NHS can now afford the cost of "tens of millions of pounds" having been granted increased funding by the government.
