The prime minister promised yesterday to protect the British veto on tax and social security policy, as Jacques Chirac warned the European parliament not to reject the Nice Treaty, saying that he knew that it "fell short of the parliament's hopes, but it was the best possible accord in the circumstances".

Blair was attacked by the Commission president Romano Prodi and the French minister for Europe over his hard line on protecting the veto.
