The Tories have said that the government's pledge to get 20,000 more nurses into the NHS by 2004 is nothing but "complete fabrication". The row, which centres on the inclusion of part time nursing posts in the 20,000 new nurses announced in July, was triggered by a Royal College of Nursing report into the problems of recruitment and retention of nurses by the NHS.
