The prime minister is coming under increased pressure to clip Peter Mandelson's wings in an effort to stop his "freelance activities" in relation to other cabinet ministers' portfolios.

The warning came from former minister Peter Kilfoyle who warned that the Northern Ireland secretary should be stopped from commenting on Europe and local government and social policy.
