Local finance fall-out

The British Chambers of Commerce have warned that new powers given to local authorities to levy a supplementary business rate could cost businesses up to £1 billion a year. The Conservatives have described the proposals as a "stealth tax on hard working businesses". Headteachers are disappointed that the green paper on local government finance did not contain proposals to ring fence education funding, a move regarded as a defeat for David Blunkett.
