Soames demands Blunt response

12th January 2011

Former defence minister and Tory grandee Nicholas Soames has put down an eye-catching question for the MoD.

He asked:

"For what reasons the recently planned official visit to Afghanistan of James Blunt and Katherine Jenkins did not take place?"

The question is due to be answered tomorrow - unkind comments that the Blunt visit was cancelled to keep troop morale up are not expected to feature.

Blunt was a soldier once - he served as an officer in the Life Guards and saw action in Kosovo as part of the Nato peacekeeping contingent.

Blunt and Katherine Jenkins have made a joint appearance for troops in the field before - in 2006 they entertained the Welsh Guards in Kosovo.
