Simon Burns praises 'wise owl' Bercow

By Ned Simons
- 8th March 2011

Despite rumours that moves are afoot to unseat Speaker Bercow, one of his harshest critics surprised many in the Commons today by offering some seemingly warm words.

Confused, or irritated, by a question from a Labour MP this afternoon, health minister Simon Burns praised Bercow for being a "wise owl" for understanding what Labour MPs were "thinking not saying".

Burns said: "Mr Speaker, you are a wise owl to be able to interpret what Honourable Members opposite are thinking but may not be saying."

Bercow responded: "Wise owl is the kindest description he has ever offered".

He added: "I'll take it that he means it, it's the best I'll ever get".

Burns has previously been forced to apologise for calling the Speaker a 'stupid sanctimonious dwarf'.
