Research on the agenda

Academic research in the UK was on the agenda at a Dods event earlier today.

Prof David Delpy and Prof Rick Rylance from Research Councils UK took part in a panel discussion with Andrew Miller, chair of the Commons science and technology committee, and Cambridge MP and research scientist Dr Julian Huppert.

They were joined by Romesh Vaitilingam, author of Research for our Future: The Role of Research in Business Success.

Romesh said the UK research base is one of the best in the world, which has a direct impact on the economic prosperity and social wellbeing of the UK.

There was a lively discussion about the ways in which government can support research, and also boost innovation.

Andrew Miller and Julian Huppert also criticised the way in which the print media approaches science, with sensationalism often the order of the day.
