Protests dampen Manchester's welcome

3rd October 2011

Delegates to the conference have noticed something different about this conference - the constant abuse they are facing in the streets.

This morning a woman approached me outside the conference centre to inform me, with not inconsiderable joy contorting her features, that "all the staff" in Manchester Central have been urinating in the drinks.

Delightful.

Everyone I spoke to has been intimidated in the streets with shouts of "Tory scum", including journalists, charity workers and exhibitors at conference.

A researcher for an MP recalled he was told to "walk in the gutter where you belong".

One MP told me that when he was approaching the conference centre yesterday he was surrounded by angry protesters.

He was in fear of his safety - he and his colleagues ended up running away.

"The sad thing is that Manchester is a great conference venue and the locals are very friendly," he said.

"But I for one would be wary of holding conference here again."
