Polls open in Oldham East and Saddleworth

13th January 2011

Voting is underway in Oldham East and Saddleworth as constituents choose a new MP to replace Labour's Phil Woolas.

The former immigration minister was stripped of his seat after a court ruled he had made knowingly false statements about his Lib Dem opponent in the run up the general election.

Polls opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm, the result is expected at around 1am tomorrow morning.

Debbie Abrahams is expected to retain the seat for Labour ahead of Lib Dem Elwyn Watkins, who was the target of Woolas' campaign literature last May.

A Labour victory would be a blow for Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg who has seen his party's poll ratings plummet since taking office.

But David Cameron has denied the Conservatives have run a weakened campaign in Oldham in order to help out the deputy prime minister.

Back in Westminster today, business secretary Vince Cable will make his first appearance at the dispatch box after he was stripped of his responsibility for media issues after he told an undercover Telegraph reporter he had "declared war on Rupert Murdoch".

At 10am the political and constitutional reform committee will be hearing from academics about the constitutional implications of the 'Cabinet Manual' which many MPs fear lacks any moral or legal legitimacy.

David Cameron will be holding a joint press conference at 1pm with French prime minister Francois Fillon.
