Panto 'homophobia' raised with PM

21st December 2010

The prime minister has been asked about his chancellor's handling of a question from a gay MP.

During Treasury questions today, Chris Bryant asked George Osborne to play Prince Charming.

The chancellor hit back with a jibe about Bryant being a "panto dame" - the gay MP objected to the term.

At a press conference this afteroon with Nick Clegg, David Cameron was asked:

"Is it acceptable to call a gay MP a panto dame in the chamber?"

The prime minister said he was not in the chamber and did not hear the remarks.

He did venture that he is pretty sure "people are capable of taking some rough and tumble in the chamber".

Nudge nudge.

Clegg observed that "of course it was not homophobic".
