MPs bowled over on College Green

MPs have met with bowling campaigners who are seeking to save the sport and its disappearing greens.

On Wednesday, Labour MPs John Woodcock and Luciana Berger were joined by Lib Dem Stephen Lloyd to meet with 'Hands off our bowling greens' supporters.

Bowlers travelled from around the country to make their case at Westminster and had the opportunity to participate in an impromptu game on College Green.

In March, Woodcock led a ten minute rule motion calling for a 'community right to buy' for bowling greens, allowing people to band together and purchase the green for themselves and maintain it as a community asset.

The Barrow-in-Furness MP and former junior crown green bowler has now tabled an early day motion, signed by 45 MPs from across the House, backing the principles of the bill.

It was hoped that the lobby, supported by Bowls England and the Sport & Recreation Alliance, will help to further raise the profile of the sport.
