MP calls for chamber Twitter screen

By Philippa Silverman
- 28th April 2011

An MP has called for a screen to be installed in the Commons chamber so Members can follow Twitter at all times.

Speaking during questions to the Leader of the House, Kevin Brennan (Lab, Cardiff W) urged for a screen to be erected in the Commons so MPs can "follow the Twitter feed as live during the course of a debate, so we could see what people are saying about us, including our own colleagues".

In response, deputy Commons leader David Heath said it was an "intriguing thought" but he suspected there are enough distractions already.

Last month the Commons procedures committee suggested that MPs should be allowed to use smartphones and iPads in the chamber, provided that they are on silent.

The report also found that 225 MPs now tweet.
