John Monks to take Lords seat

Former trade union boss John Monks will be introduced into the House of Lords at the start of business on Monday.
Baron Monks, of Blackley in the County of Greater Manchester, is best-known in the UK as TUC general secretary, a post he held for a decade from 1993.
In 2003 he was elected as general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation - he was re-elected in 2007.
Monks is one of the most influential people on the European Left, and he should bring a welcome new dimension to debate in the Lords.
