Ken to appear before his peers

14th January 2011

Ken Clarke will be among old friends when he gives evidence to the Lords constitution committee last week.

Committee members include Lord Crickhowell, secretary of state for Wales 1979 to 1987, Lord Renton of Mount Harry, who was chief whip 1989 to 1990 and Lord Shaw of Northstead, who spent 30 years as a Tory MP.

Clarke, justice secretary and lord chancellor, will be making his first appearance before the Lords constitution committee since he was appointed to David Cameron's cabinet.

The committee will question him on a range of areas including: relations between the judiciary, the executive and Parliament; plans to establish a commission to create a British Bill of Rights; concerns about the increased use of Henry VIII powers by Government and how he plans to achieve wider judicial diversity.

Clarke will give evidence next Wednesday at 10.30am.
