House of Lords now on Twitter

By Tony Grew
- 29th September 2011

The House of Lords has signed itself up to Twitter.

Their official feed was launched earlier this month, on Lord Speaker Baroness D'Souza's first day, September 5th.

She pressed the button on the first official tweet and was joined on that monentous occasion by David Beamish, Clerk of the Parliaments.

That seems terribly formal for a Twitter account, but then this is the Lords. They like a nice ceremony.

Anyway, Baroness D'Souza wants tweeple to use @UKHouseofLords to "join in the debate on issues the House of Lords works on".

"I hope you will join us @UKHouseofLords and let us know what you think," she said.

"My hope is that over time @UKHouseofLords will become a really valuable way for us to speak with you, the public on whose behalf we work, directly.

"The House of Lords is a vital part of the UK's democracy and what we do is all about tackling issues and holding the government to account on subjects which matter to us all.

"We have a reputation for leading the way in opening our work to the public, from being the first second chamber to be televised back in 1985 to becoming the first and only upper chamber in the world to have a cross-party blog.

"That is why I want @UKHouseofLords to offer an extra way of working with us, enthusing and engaging more people than ever before in the vital work the Lords does."

So far they have nearly 1,000 followers and have tweeted 144 times.
