House of Lords crowned quickest flippers

By Ned Simons
- 8th March 2011

The House of Lords won the annual the parliamentary pancake race today, as the press team was accused of cheating by MPs.

The race raises awareness of charity Rehab's work across England and Scotland and pits teams from the Commons, Lords and parliamentary press gallery against each other.

Labour's Stephen Pound had joked that the MPs' team would employ a variety of tactics including "brutality" to secure a win for the second year in a row.

But after finishing a disappointing third, outraged MPs grumbled that the team from the parliamentary press gallery had engaged in a bit of underhand play themselves. As if!

However the accusation was later lent weight by photographic evidence from Tory MP Tracy Crouch that appeared to show some, inventive, behaviour on the start line from the press.

After their defeat Crouch tweeted: "Disappointed MPs came 3rd esp as I won my heat! Under AV we'dve won".

The MPs and press were battling it out for last place having been left for dead by the team from the House of Lords, who stormed to victory as the quickest flippers.

You can watch the race over at the BBC.
