Harriet and the 'duped' Lib Dems

By Tony Grew
- 4th March 2011

Labour's deputy leader Harriet Harman was on bullish form at yesterday's lobby lunch.

She professed herself to have a newly-enhanced political status now she is "finally a political wife".

Harman is clearly happy to have husband Jack Dromey alongside her in the Commons, but she reflected that when they leave together Jack spends too long chatting to people.

She revealed she would prefer to blank a few people and make her way to the car park as quickly as she can.

Harman unsurprisingly talked up Labour and their "tidal wave" of 50,000 new members since the election.

She also bashed the Lib Dems over the AV referendum, claiming that the Tories had 'duped' them.

Harman said she is in favour of AV, but Nick Clegg should have argued that the referendum be held later in the parliament, and not on the same day as other elections.

My Lib Dem lunch guest was amused by this, as it is the exact opposite of what happened - it was the Tories who wanted it later, and the Lib Dems who wanted to hold it soon after the election.

Harman also had a pop or ten at the Tories.

"Just because you are born to rule does not mean you are any good at it," was one of her kinder observations.
