Goldsmith cleared over election spending

23rd December 2010

Zac Goldsmith learned on Wednesday that he will face no further legal action over allegations about his election spending.

The Electoral Commission said it will not report Richmond Park MP Goldsmith to the police.

Channel 4 News and an organisation called the bureau of investigative journalism alleged Goldsmith had spent more than the legal limit.

However, today the commission concluded:

"Declared costs relating to the long campaign were under the expenditure limit and we have no evidence that this was the result of under- reporting costs for that campaign".

Goldsmith said the commission had "stated clearly what we always knew - that our total election expenditure across the whole campaign was several thousand pounds less than the prescribed limit".

However, the way in which some election costs were apportioned between his parliamentary campaign and the concurrent local government election campaign were judged to be "not consistent with the commission's guidance or good practice".

Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock has also been told that he will not face any further action after allegations of indecent assualt involving a constituent.

The CPS said there is insufficient evidence to prosecute.

Hancock had always maintained he was innocent.

"I hope that this will draw a line under this for all concerned," he said.
