Finally, sporting success for Cam

7th January 2011

The PM has not had much luck with sport so far, what with the 2018 World Cup bid fiasco and England's dismal performance in South Africa last summer.

So his staff must have been delighted with the news from Australia that England have finally won something, albeit cricket and not football.

David Cameron cannily praised the team without expressing his own emotions.

"I've spoken to Andrew Strauss this morning and congratulated the team, coaches and everyone behind the side on this tremendous victory," the PM said in a statement.

"Retaining the Ashes was a fantastic achievement, but winning the series really is the icing on the cake.

"We've seen some great sporting moments over the series and the team have provided us with some brilliant memories that I'm sure fans will talk about for years to come.

"The whole country is incredibly proud of them."

Let's hope England do not have to wait another 24 years to win again.

The website of the prime minister of Australia does not have a statement from Julia Gillard on the Ashes defeat - perhaps it will appear later.
