Ed Miliband to marry long-term partner

By Philippa Silverman
- 27th May 2011

Ed Miliband will marry long-term partner Justine Thornton today in what he says will be a "special and fantastic day".

The Labour leader has invited just one other MP to the wedding, his older brother, David and wife Louise.

The low-key civil ceremony, at the Langar Hall hotel in Nottingham, near where Thornton grew up, will take half an hour.

There will be 50 family members and "old friends" attending, including their two young children.

A reception at the same venue is set to include "drinks and canapes" and speeches delivered by the bride and groom only – Miliband having dispensed with the tradition of having a best man.

The locally-sourced menu starts with asparagus followed by lamb or stuffed aubergine and then knickerbocker glory, crème brulée or summer pudding for dessert.

Guests have been asked to donate to charity instead of giving gifts.

The couple will take advantage of the long parliamentary recess to take a five-day honeymoon to an undisclosed location in Europe.
