Corbyn asks for Al Jazeera

By Tony Grew
- 31st January 2011

Leftwing Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn has called for Qatar-based Arabic news station Al Jazeera's English language station to be available in the House of Commons.

He raised the issue on a point of order after today's ministerial statement on the situation in Egypt.

Corbyn called for the channel to be available alongside others such as BBC and Sky News which can be watching on the parliamentary TV service.

He said that events in Egypt had made him ask for an expansion of sattelite channels available - televsions across the parliamentary estate show not just the Lords and Commons live, but the annunciators for both Houses and terrestrial TV and radio stations.

Mr Speaker told Corbyn he had not made a point of order but a "point of ingenuity".
