Clegg's unwelcome birthday present

7th January 2011

The Liberal Democrats poll rating has fallen to its lowest level since June 1990, as party leader Nick Clegg celebrates his birthday.

A YouGov survey for the Sun puts the party's support on just 7 per cent, while the Conservatives are four points behind Labour on 39 per cent.

The coalition government's approval rating has slumped to a record low of 20 per cent.

Only 3 per cent believe the Lib Dems are led by "people of real talent", compared to the Conservatives on 27 per cent and Labour on 17 per cent.

It is terrible news for Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg who turns 44 today, a week ahead of the crucial Oldham East and Saddleworth by-election.

The deputy prime minister this morning will use a speech to underline the government's intention to replace the current control orders system.
