Cash keeps Europe on the agenda
Good old Bill Cash.
We have not heard much about the EU this week, so no doubt the Tory whips will be delighted that tomorrow afternoon Cash will be given prime time in the Commons to demand, yes, a referendum on Europe.
With impeccable timing, Cash's ten minute rule bill tomorrow concerns "the creation of a fiscal union or economic governance amongst those member states of the European Union which comprise the Eurozone".
Cash wants to amend the European Union Act 2011 so that there will be a UK referendum on whether or not to allow such a union to take place, despite the fact that the UK would not be a party to it.
The EU Act received Royal assent in July. It provides for a UK-wide referendum on any proposed EU treaty or treaty change which would transfer powers from the UK to the EU.
The whips will take some comfort from the fact that with a ten minute rule bill there is no time for a full-blown debate.
