Cash for gold leaves MPs cold

By Tony Grew
- 1st November 2010

A Labour MP has tabled an early day motion expressing concern about the impact of 'cash for gold' businesses.

Katy Clark's EDM has been signed by 20 MPs. She said there are "implications that this could have on crime, in particular on the number of burglaries taking place; further notes that authorities across the world have noticed a link between cash for gold businesses and increased crime levels".

Cash for gold enterprises have become part of the landscape of afternoon TV, with ads encouraging the public to send in their "spare gold".

The EDM calls on the government "to work closely with trading standards departments and to introduce tighter regulations on cash for gold businesses in order to bring about a reduction in resulting crime".
