Bookies slash odds on no to AV vote

By Tony Grew
- 19th April 2011

Bookmakers have said the odds of 'No' votes securing a majority in the AV referendum are tumbling - and could fall further.

"All the momentum is now with 'No'," said Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes.

"We wouldn't be surprised if the odds shorten again soon. We're clutching at straws in the hope 'Yes' can spring a surprise and save us."

Bookmakers face a hefty payout of the 'No' campaign is successful.

Ladbroke's latest odds are:

YES - 5/2 (from 11/10)

NO - 2/7 (from 4/6)

The latest opinion poll from ICM of those likely to vote showed a big lead for 'No' on 58 per cent and 'Yes' on 42 per cent.

Meanwhile the campaigns continue to clash.

Last night energy secretary Chris Huhne used a Newsnight appearance to accuse the 'No' campaign of "gutter politics" and "downright lies".

The prime minister has warned of the danger that Britain "sleepwalks into this second-rate system that damages our democracy".
